A New Age Restriction on Tanning Beds

October 19, 2011

There have been some large debates surrounding the issue of fake tanning in tanning beds.  It is widely known that there are large negative effects, but that has not seemed to stop people from fake tanning.  According to the Melanoma Foundation using tanning beds before the age of 20 increases one’s risk for skin cancer by 50%.  Even with these statics many people still use-tanning beds.

On October 9th, Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill into law stating that no minors under the age of 18 would be allowed to use tanning beds.  It will go into effect January 1st, 2012.  There is an exception; a minor may use a tanning bed if there is written consent from a doctor stating that the use is necessary for a medical condition.  Prior to this ban anyone from the ages of 14 to 17 could use tanning beds with the consent of a parent, a form that is rather easy to fudge.  There are 31 other states that have similar restrictions, but the other 18 have no restrictions.

Psychological research has shown that at the ages between 14 and 17 are still developing their decision-making skills.  This is a scary thought considering that tanning beds are a serious health risk.

Although being tan is an ideal skin color, there are many other ways to obtain a tan such as lotion and spray tans.  But, the best thing one can do is to bring pale back in style!
